This Easter, students already working securely at a grade 6 or above can book a higher-level Jekyll & Hyde revision session designed to help them develop the sophistication, precision, and conceptual depth needed to reach a grade 7, 8, or 9 in AQA GCSE English Literature Paper 1.

This 60-minute session is aimed at students who already have a sound grasp of the novella and want to refine their responses so that they are more perceptive, controlled, and ambitious. The teaching will focus not only on the text itself, but also on the demands of the mark scheme: what distinguishes a clear answer from a high-level, developed or exploratory one, how to meet the assessment objectives with greater precision, and how to produce analysis that is thoughtful, secure, and sharply focused on the question.

This session cannot be booked as part of a course, but it forms part of a wider series of higher-level revision lessons available for the core texts on AQA GCSE English Literature Papers 1 and 2. Other higher-level sessions are also available for Macbeth and An Inspector Calls, allowing students to select targeted support in the texts where they most want to sharpen their performance. These sessions are designed for students who are already able to produce clear, relevant responses and now want to understand how to move beyond that level into the top mark scheme bands.

In this higher-level Jekyll & Hyde session, we will work on building out two essay plans that focus on more developed, complex, and exploratory readings of the novella’s themes and characters. The aim is to help students move beyond competent explanation and towards the kind of conceptual, well-structured argument that examiners reward at the highest levels. This is especially valuable for students who know the text well, but are less sure how to make their analysis feel more original, more flexible, or more sharply attuned to the wording of the question.

The session is therefore particularly well suited to students who want to move up the mark scheme levels but are not entirely sure what is required. It offers a clear markscheme-led approach, with examiner-led advice on what lifts an essay from secure and sensible to genuinely thoughtful and exploratory. Students will be guided through how to shape a more conceptual argument, how to use quotations more selectively and effectively, and how to explore Stevenson’s methods in a way that feels purposeful rather than mechanical. There will also be a strong emphasis on how to develop interpretations of ideas such as duality, secrecy, reputation, repression, and morality in a way that is more layered and analytical.

A good knowledge of the text is assumed, along with the ability to analyse securely at around a grade 6 standard or above, in order to get the most out of the pace and level of challenge in this session, although all students are welcome. For those ready for this next step, it offers the chance to see more clearly what high-level literary analysis looks like in practice and how to produce responses that feel more assured, perceptive, and ambitious.

Students booking this session will receive a lesson pack and supporting resources, with the recording available afterwards to all participants. Optional essay marking can also be added, making it an ideal choice for students who want advanced, examiner-informed support on Jekyll & Hyde as part of their Easter revision.
